Description
Sip Happens: The Hidden History of Soda – Volume 1
Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Root Beer
By Kevin L. Whitworth
Before they were billion-dollar brands, these sodas were sold as medicine, moral alternatives to alcohol, or caffeine-fueled rebellion in a bottle. This isn’t just soft drink history—it’s American absurdity in carbonated form.
Sip Happens: Volume 1 brings together four irreverent, investigative deep-dives into the twisted origin stories of Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Root Beer. You'll discover:
-
Coca-Cola's cocaine-laced roots and secret deal with the U.S. government to keep using coca leaves
-
Pepsi’s underdog hustle, courtroom chaos, and taste-test takedowns
-
Mountain Dew’s evolution from whiskey chaser to radioactive gamer fuel
-
Root Beer’s rise from racist medicine shows to soda fountain nostalgia
With wit, sarcasm, and a dash of moral caffeine, Kevin L. Whitworth reveals how marketing, manipulation, and mythology turned weird elixirs into American icons.
If you like history with fizz, facts with bite, and storytelling that’s anything but flat—this book delivers.

Description
Louisiana has never been easy to pin down. Born of swamps and river mud, claimed by France, Spain, and the United States (sometimes all in the same century), it has been a crossroads of empires, cultures, and catastrophes. From Indigenous mound-builders to the Mardi Gras krewes of New Orleans, from the brutality of slavery to the brilliance of jazz, Louisiana’s history is as tangled and unruly as the bayous that define it.
This isn’t a sanitized tale of noble pioneers and tidy progress. It’s a story of contradictions, where corruption and creativity walk hand in hand, where hurricanes and oil spills batter communities that somehow keep singing, and where resilience is less about quiet endurance than throwing a parade in the face of disaster.
Gumbo and Grit: A Not-So-Polite History of Louisiana dives into the state’s layered past with equal parts candor and wit. You’ll meet conquistadors and Cajuns, pirates and populists, enslaved laborers and jazz legends, all stirring the pot that made Louisiana what it is today.
Messy, vibrant, heartbreaking, and unforgettable - this is history the Louisiana way.

Description
Childhood was an amazing period of life–a time when you were unconditionally dependent on the decisions of adults. Theo always consider herself an obedient child and never thought of being anything else. Obedient children were held up as examples to the neighbors, but even obedient children were sometimes drowned in the river by distraught mothers.
Theo often saw fear in her mother‘s eyes. That fear had many shades. Most often superstitious. But rarely gratuitous. And when next to her father always reverent. This time, the fear was animalistic, forcing her to seriously consider her small position in this vast world.
She felt like the world was floating around her as she fell onto soft grass. She wanted to bury herself deeper in it–to stop this dizziness, to hide in the embrace of his soft, caring hands. Without breaking eye contact, Raiden discreetly caressed her chin. Theo closed her eyes and lifted her chin higher, baring her neck like a cat. Thin fingers slid toward her carotid artery and pressed down gently. Her heartbeat quickened.
As soon as he left the room, Theo listened to her body. She got out of bed carefully, afraid of getting dizzy, but nothing of the sort happened. Theo tried not to think about how Lada’s serious condition didn’t fit that narrative. She headed for the shower. That feeling of inevitability that had long been a part of her swirled in her stomach, making her nauseous. To get rid of it, she had to find the strength to make one call.

Description
Lady Catriona Blair had no intention of marrying anyone — especially not the brooding Highlander who left her behind five years ago with nothing but a scar and a rumor.
But when Struan MacGregor returns to Braemòr, taller, colder, and ten times more inconvenient, Catriona finds herself tangled in a mess of whispered alliances, sharp glances, and the kind of tension that ruins perfectly good corsets.
The estate is on the brink of war.
The halls echo with secrets.
And everyone — from the scheming aunt to the mysterious woman in the shadows — wants something from Braemòr.
Love was never the plan.
Neither was betrayal.
And yet… here we are.
Passion simmers.
Daggers gleam.
And a dynasty will be born in fire.
Welcome to the house that watches everyone — and forgets nothing.

Description
Five years ago, Don Snyder was teaching English at Colgate University. He was forty years old and had a wife, three children, a new baby on the way, and what seemed like a secure middle-class future. But then Snyder lost his chance at tenure -- and, all of a sudden, he was out of a job.The Cliff Walk is a moving, clear-eyed account of Snyder's agonizing loss and what it feels like to fall, rung by rung, down the socio-economic ladder. Snyder chronicles the denial and disbelief he went through as his hopes of finding another teaching job faded after being rejected for ninety positions. He explains how each painful change -- selling his house, buying groceries with food stamps -- reminded him how much he and his family had taken for granted in their previous life. And he describes how he finally found new hope in a job on a home construction crew in Maine. Working outside for ten hours a day through a vicious winter taught Snyder about his own cowardice and the lies he had come to believe about what a professional life of hard work entitled him to.Written with precision and elegance, The Cliff Walk captures the depth of one family's love and speaks to anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to be out of a job and out in the cold.
